Design Process


Chang Ho is a modular typeface translating the traditional Korean window lattice into a visual language for cross-cultural identity.

Growing up as a South Korean in Indonesia and Singapore, my experience of the world was mediated through multiple cultural lenses. This project physically manifests that cross-cultural psychological state by turning traditional architectural philosophies into a modern communication tool.




The Translucent Boundary

I turned to the Korean Hanok (traditional Korean building) and its Chang Ho (window and door) lattice. Unlike hard Western windows, Chang Ho is a translucent structure. Layered with Hanji (mulberry paper), it diffuses harsh sunlight and allows the wind to pass through. It represents a profound architectural philosophy where nature and human spaces are not severed, but fluidly connected.



Building a Cultural Filter

How can modular typography act as a cultural filter?
I deconstructed the geometric Wanjasal lattice to extract its core structural logic. By projecting the Latin alphabet onto this Korean architectural framework, I forced a Western communication system to be constructed entirely through an Eastern structural lens.

This research evolved into a functional OpenType font (.otf). It is a practical design tool inviting the wider community to actively participate in translating architectural philosophies into modern communication.
